The Reverend Doctor Garrett Bradley Bugg began his ministry at Wycliffe
Presbyterian Church in April 2013. Pastor Bugg was born in Sylva, a small
town in the North Carolina mountains. He later moved to Charlotte, North
Carolina and graduated from Myers Park High School with an International Baccalaureate diploma.
Attending North Carolina State University in Raleigh, Pastor Bugg was active in many campus organizations. He was awarded a Bachelor of Arts degree in English, with honors in 2003. Discerning a call to ministry, Pastor Bugg then attended Princeton Theological Seminary in Princeton, New Jersey. There he earned a Master of Divinity degree in 2006.
After seminary, Pastor Bugg sought to increase his knowledge in pastoral care and counseling and enrolled in the Gloria Dei Academy, a training site for clinical pastoral education. While there, he completed over sixteen hundred hours of clinical training. He was ordained in August 2007 by Presbytery of Charlotte, and was installed as Associate Pastor of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Hampton, VA. In January 2010 he moved to Ashland, Kentucky serving as Senior Pastor and Head of Staff at First Presbyterian Church. During his time in Ashland, he continued his work in clinical pastoral education, and received certification as both a Clinical Chaplain and Pastoral Counselor.
While completing the final stages of his clinical training in Virginia Beach, Pastor Bugg founded the Wycliffe Institute, an accredited training center with the College of Pastoral Supervision and Psychotherapy. In March 2017, Pastor Bugg earned his certification as a Diplomate in Pastoral Supervision. In September 2016, he began working toward his Doctor of Ministry degree at Lancaster Theological Seminary. After submitting his doctoral thesis on moral injury, and how ministers can provide care to veterans struggling from their experiences in combat, Pastor Bugg graduated from the seminary in May 2019.
Pastor Bugg married his wife, Alison, in September of 2011. A native Philadelphian, Ali is an AEA stage manager who has worked on Broadway, Off-Broadway, and in regional theaters across the country. She currently puts her stage management skills to good use as the Operations Manager for the Nexus Global Studies Program at Cape Henry Collegiate. The Bugg's have been blessed with two children: their daughter, Emilia, was born in November 2013, and their son, Garrett Joseph, was born in February 2017. The family dog, a rescue Dachshund named Penny, enjoys collecting wayward morsels of food from under Joey's chair, and chasing Virginia squirrels.
